She is a native of Bogotá, Colombia. She graduated from California State University of Long Beach with highest honors, earning a Bachelors of Art degree in Spanish Language and Linguistics in May 2001, followed two years later by a Masters of Art degree in Spanish from the same institution. In 1999 Basabe earned with highest honors, at Cerritos Community College an Associate of Arts degree in Spanish and in 1997 another A.A in Culinary Arts Chef’s training. Professor Basabe has been the recipient of very prestigious awards and scholarships based on her student’s outstanding performance and excellence. Among these recognitions are: The Graduate Fellowship Program 2002, 2003; Outstanding Graduate in the College of Liberal Arts 2001; Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholarship 2000-2001, 2002-2003; Honorary Award Recognition by The National Dean’s List; Cal Grant A 1999 to 2001. She has taught Spanish at Long Beach City College, Golden West College, Saddle Back College, Chapman University, Cypress College, Orange Coast College and Cerritos Community College. Professor Basabe also taught at Broward Community College in the State of Florida. Her contributions to the community also has included volunteering as a translator for Hispanic patients at Rojas Medical Plaza in Hawthorne CA. Professor Basabe plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Spanish literature and linguistics. “I believe that I can improve the way Spanish is taught and I have the motivation to better our society by helping others learn about each other through language,” says Basabe about her profession.
